چکیده

A study was conducted during Zaid 2005, in Uttar Pradesh, India, to evaluate the nature and magnitude of genetic divergence in 30 bitter gourd genotypes. Results revealed the presence of wide genetic diversity. The genotypes were grouped into 6 clusters based on Mahalanobis D statistics using Tocher's 2 method. The clustering pattern of genotypes revealed that the genetic diversity was independent of the geographical diversity. Among the 6 clusters, maximum numbers of genotypes were found in cluster V, while clusters III was found to be mono-genotypic. Among the 12 quantitative characters studied, individual fruit weight constituted a maximum of 64.14% contribution to the divergence, followed by days to first female flower appearance. Ranking of genotypes based on intra-cluster mean performance for these characters which are major contributors of genetic diversity revealed its usulness in selecting parents for heterosis breeding.

Inheritance of gynoecism in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.).

The inheritance of sex expression in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and other cucurbits is well documented; however, the genetics of female sex (gynoecism) expression in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) has not been described. Inheritance of gynoecism in bitter gourd was studied in a 100% gynoecious line (Gy263B). The F(2) and testcross segregation data revealed that gynoecism in Gy263B is under ...

Fluorimetric studies of the binding of Momordica charantia (bitter gourd) lectin with ligands.

The association constants for the binding of a series of ligands with a galactose-specific lectin from Momordica charantia (bitter gourd) has been determined through the ligand-induced quenching of protein fluorescence. Analysis of the iodide quenching suggested that there is a slight increase in the accessibility of tryptophan residues of the lectin on binding lactose.

Draft genome sequence of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), a vegetable and medicinal plant in tropical and subtropical regions

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) is an important vegetable and medicinal plant in tropical and subtropical regions globally. In this study, the draft genome sequence of a monoecious bitter gourd inbred line, OHB3-1, was analyzed. Through Illumina sequencing and de novo assembly, scaffolds of 285.5 Mb in length were generated, corresponding to ∼84% of the estimated genome size of bitter gourd ...
